The V&A unveils its first lingerie collaboration with Coco de Mer
The V&A and Coco de Mer have revealed the fruits of their collaboration - a sophisticated lingerie collection inspired by nature. When news broke of the surprise pairing back in January, it seemed like an unlikely partnership - and yet the two names have more in common than you might think.
"I love the V&A Museum and feel that as two British heritage brands with a love of beauty we were very well-matched," Lucy Litwack, CEO of Coco de Mer, told us. "We met and felt that we could produce a lingerie collection that would embody the key elements of both of our brands - luxury, opulence and glamour."
"After our initial meeting we felt there was a real synergy between our brands," adds Lauren Sizeland, the V&A's director of business development and licensing.
"We share a passion for high quality, exquisite design and felt that we could develop a lingerie collection that would embody luxury, opulence and glamour; key elements of both the V&A’s collections and Coco de Mer’s lingerie offering."
The V&A opened up its archives for Coco de Mer, who were inspired by artefacts that formed embroideries and prints. An 18th Century glass and gilt scented bottle inspired the golden heron embroidery, while the botanical beauty print originated from an embroidered silk cushion cover. William Morris' wreath-net furnishing fabrics from 1882 have been used to create a floral print.
While the 32-piece collection - which comprises wired and unwired bras, multiple knicker shapes, bodysuits and nightwear - is unarguably sensual, it isn't as overtly erotic as Coco de Mer's typical collections. That said, the silhouettes are all reflective of the brand's most popular styles.
Prints are another new area for the underwear brand, but Litwack hopes that the change in aesthetic will appeal to a broader clientele.
"It was great to be able to develop the prints and then work on new shapes to create a truly luxurious nightwear collection which would work for lots of different shapes and ages," she says.
The range goes on sale at Coco-de-mer.com on 15 August with another collection planned for spring/summer 2019. Prices range from £65 to £595.
