Huvafen Fushi | Maldives Luxury Hotels Resorts
If anything deserves to be called “a postcard destination”, it has to be the Maldives. The lagoons are colored in fifty shades of blue and the pearly white beaches look computer-enhanced in their perfection. The Indian Ocean is as warm as a bath and the spectacle of coral gardens and the underwater life is as dazzling as it is wonderful.
The only problem with the Maldives is that they confuse: so many super luxurious hotels, on so many atolls. So where to go? Go to Huvafen Fushi in North Male Atoll, only a 30-minute luxury speedboat ride from Male International Airport, for a constant bombardment of paradise perfection. This is a small Maldivian idyll where blue skies reflect in the glittering water and sea, pool and horizon merge into one. Tropical island bliss!
Like sister-hotel Niyama Maldives, Huvafen Fushi is tailor-made for honeymooners, die-hard romantics, luxe-lovers and lagoon-lounging lizards. It’s one of the best hotels in the Maldives, or even in the world. But beyond the industry-standard palm trees and sparkling infinity pool, the differences are telling: top-class food, can’t-do-enough-for-you staff, ultra-luxurious & ultra-big villas, a ridiculously romantic setting and pure spirit. The overall feel is of understated opulence. If all that’s not reason enough to book, wait until you see Huvafen’s spa which has a really spectacular underwater treatment pavilion. Totally hotelicious!
Set within its own lagoon, Huvafen Fushi in the Maldives is a natural wonderland with only 44 beach villas and above-average large overwater pavilions. Huvafen Fushi’s exclusive villas range from 125 sqm to 330 sqm and are a blend of modernity, luxury and nature. Inside, the villas are all equipped with huge beds (you will lose your other half in the middle of the night), private bars including espresso machines plus complimentary soft drinks, wooden closets and modern furniture. Tech toys in the villas include big TV’s, Bang & Olufsen cordless telephones, Bose surround sound system with DVDs and connected iPods. Nice detail: the complimentary champagne in the room and the sensual toys you can buy to spice up your stay even more. Furthermore, all the bathrooms are stocked with large & luxurious Acqua di Parma bath products. Sounds chill, don’t you think? Outside, you’ll find comfy daybeds, sun loungers and a plunge pool. Families looking to splurge can book the 800 sqm Beach Pavilion featuring a private pool & beach plus avant-garde design. Drifting 200 meters offshore, the two 330 sqm Ocean Pavilions with private pools offer pampered privacy at its best. We stayed in two different villas: Deluxe Beach Bungalow and Lagoon Bungalow. The Deluxe Beach Bungalow including two pools is where you feel one with nature. We absolutely loved the heavenly outdoor bathroom. Imagine an outdoor bathroom with two showers & sinks, a bath, a plunge pool and giant lounge bed. It won’t get any better than this. Truly outstanding! Offering a picture-perfect panoramic view of the Indian Ocean, the Lagoon Bungalow with pool is where you can step directly from your deck into the turquoise Maldivian waters. Hit the daybeds for some sun and have your personal “Thakuru” (Maldivian butler) fetch your fancies to complete the picture of your ultimate stay in paradise.
Dining at Huvafen Fushi Maldives is a delicious affair with four restaurants and two bars for designer cocktails & sundowners. Breakfast at Celsius is really sublime. Check out the breakfast buffet for an ever-changing array of extraordinary muffins, a variety of doughnuts, croissants, pains au chocolat, and, of course, also lots of healthy options like detox juices, smoothies, homemade yoghurts and all the variations of fruit you can think of… these chefs are insane. Or order something from Celsius’ breakfast menu. Think of a Coconut crepe with caramelized banana, palm sugar and lime syrup or Eggs Florentine (English muffin with sautéed spinach, poached egg and hollandaise). You will dream about Huvafen Fushi’s breakfast for months. Lunch is served either overwater at RAW restaurant or barefoot under a canopy of coconut trees at Fogliani’s (try the Tuna carpaccio with melon, mint & feta cheese or ask the Dutch chef to prepare a freshly caught fish, our personal favorite). For health freaks, RAW Restaurant ticks every box. We were really amazed by the food here. From the Zucchini, cucumber, green tomato and walnut ricotta lasagna with basil pistachio pesto to the Carpaccio of avocado, local reef fish, wild mushroom, pomegranate and pink peppercorn, it’s all exceptionally fresh & flavorful. But what about dinner? For laidback dining go to Celsius, Fogliani is sometimes open for special dinners like a beach barbeque buffet, but for a standout supper reserve a table at overwater restaurant SALT. Here, the seafood tower is as giant as the sharks that swim by, while the wines are as stunning as the parrot fish underwater. Guests can also pick their own secluded spot, a picnic for two on the beach, dinner On The Rock surrounded by flickering flames or beneath the stars in the boudoir chic on-the-sand Cardamom Lounge, perhaps? Now that’s what we call romance!
Huvafen Fushi in North Male Atoll, Maldives, is the ultimate do-what-you-like haven: a place where you can sunbathe naked in complete privacy all day, have whatever food you like delivered whenever you like, or go activity-mad. A full range of activities includes yoga, fishing, dolphin cruises, traditional dhoni boat trips, sandbank snorkeling, diving, feeding the huge and extremely hungry rays and much more above and below the Indian Ocean. Exploring the coral reefs on a luxury dhoni (authentic Maldivian sailboat) is something we can highly recommend at the end of the day. Sip champagne, enjoy yummy canapés and watch the fiery sunset. Truly amazing! You can also choose to stay overnight for a very unique experience. If there’s anything to grumble at, the gym with a view needs an upgrade, but luckily they have plans to redo it this year (2015). Huvafen Fushi Maldives offers several yoga classes per day, some are complimentary and some not, although we think it wasn’t really worth the money as it’s too simple for fanatic yogis like us. On the other hand, the overwater yoga pavilion is a brilliant spot for meditation.
If you’re bored (what is wrong with you?), you can swap the beach for the subLIME spa. Lime Spa’s treatments, offered either in the unique underwater room or above the surface, are hard to resist. Why not try the signature underwater Lime Lights Ritual for 90 minutes of pure pampering? So divine!
Good to know: Travelling with kids in tow? There’s a game room for the little ones, but there’s no kids club. Try to book a villa at sister-hotel Niyama Private Islands Maldives where they opened a new neighboring island, Play Island, with lots of facilities & activities for kids. To make a difference, you can adopt coral here. Huvafen Fushi’s coral adoption and cultivation program has grown over 2000 corals. The passionate marine biologist Nicole from Germany can tell you everything about it.
Ok, island time is so chilled, you’ll never want to leave. Back to life & back to reality… Our memories will last forever!
